The purpose of this resource is to identify features of the school site that could be changed to improve safety and accessibility for students, staff, and visitors.

Description

A comprehensive review of the quality and condition of the school site features, and how they are being used by people travelling to and from school (e.g., access points and ramps, snow clearance, bus loading zones, parking spaces, bike racks).

The audit helps to identify barriers to access and locations of conflict between pedestrians, cyclists, school buses, and cars. The information gathered can inform future decisions about the layout, maintenance, and management of the site. When implemented across multiple schools, the audit results provide benchmarking to help prioritize sites for investment and improvement as part of a school board’s long-term schedule of maintenance and renovations.

A School Site Audit can also be used in combination with a comprehensive Walkabout to assess the safety and accessibility of the broader neighbourhood and the routes to school.
