GCC’s Approach to Generative AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have a well-documented negative impact on our environment, contributing to significant carbon emissions and water depletion, among other harms. As an organization focused on addressing the climate crisis, we critically evaluate how the tools we use affect our mission. GCC has an AI policy and guidelines. We are committed to the judicious and transparent use of generative AI.
Our AI guidelines
- Mission Alignment: We are committed to using AI technologies only when they provide a considerable benefit to our mission. An internal review process guides our consideration of how our mission is helped or hindered by AI. AI analyzes and predicts; it does not think, understand, or reason. Thinking, understanding, and reasoning are fundamental to our mission, vision, and values.
- Human-Centric Use: We do not use AI to write e-mails or publications, or to create photos, videos, or illustrations. We believe that our staff and board bring value and authenticity to GCC and we showcase their work.
- Transparency: We do use AI for translation and transcription, data synthesis, templating, and other rote tasks. We are open to new, ethical uses and will disclose them when they are adopted.
- Compliance: AI use must abide by GCC’s Privacy Policy and AI Usage Policy and must comply with all with data protection and privacy laws, intellectual property laws, employment standards legislation, and anti-discrimination laws.
- Accuracy and Verification: All information generated or tasks supported by AI require human verification. Everything we publish will meet our internal standards of verification, which includes addressing biases.
- Accountability: Any errors or inaccuracies resulting from the use of AI tools will be transparently addressed and corrected.
