Why trust Green Communities Canada and our Energy Advisor network?
As the longest-serving licensed EnerGuide Rating provider in Canada, Green Communities Canada (GCC) has been a trusted source of advice and advocacy for Home Energy Solutions for over 30 years. GCC is a non-profit charity and does not sell renovations or home heating or cooling appliances. GCC’s energy advisors are based in communities across Ontario and many of them work for locally-based non-profit charities.
What is Heat Pump Week?
Green Communities Canada launched Heat Pump Week in 2026 because we recognized that homeowners have questions about heat pumps and that there are a lot of confusing myths and misinformation circulating about heat pumps.
The driving motivation behind GCC’s Home Energy Solutions network is to support each homeowner so they have what they need to make an informed and effective decision for their own home.
Heat Pump Week occurs in mid-October each year and features free events, including online introductions to heat pumps, virtual tours of heat pumps in action, case studies from homeowners who have transitioned to heat pumps, informative sessions about funding options, and locally-based in-person meet and greets with energy advisors and contractors.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a heat pump?
A heat pump is an electrical heating and cooling system. One heat pump can replace both your existing furnace and air conditioning systems.
How does a heat pump work?
A heat pump works in the same way an air conditioner works, but in the other direction. It extracts heat from outdoor air and distributes the heat indoors.
What is a mini-split heat pump?
Specialized for houses without central ductwork, a mini-split (or “ductless”) heat pump provides indoor units usually mounted high on the wall that heat and cool the rooms they are installed in. A Mini-split heat pumps are most commonly used in houses with boilers and radiators or electric baseboard heating.
What is a geothermal or ground-source heat pump?
What is a cold-climate heat pump?
Cold-climate heat pumps are specially designed to perform well in cold weather. They maintain their efficiency and ability to extract heat to meet specific standards at low temperatures. Most incentive programs provide rebates for cold-climate heat pumps in Canada.
What does the sizing of a heat pump matter?
Heat pumps are all about efficiency. The remarkable comfort and savings a heat pump can provide depend on getting a unit that is sized to meet the demands of your home. Switching to a heat pump can reduce your energy bills and cut your dependency on burning fossil fuels… if you get a heat pump that is sized appropriately for your home.
Did you know that in 2023-24 over half of the heat pumps installed in Ontario homes were undersized? That means that homeowners must rely on fossil fuels and other more costly methods of heating more than they should have to. GCC’s Energy Advisors can help assess your home’s unique needs and provide clarity on which heat pump solutions will fit your home and maximize your cost savings and comfort. Learn more about our Heat Pump Right-Sizing Service here.
What is a heat pump water heater?
Heat pump water heaters do not generate heat directly. They move heat from the basement or utility room air into a hot water storage tank.
