Green Communities Canada is delighted to announce the Government of Ontario has confirmed new financial support for the Ontario Active School Travel program. GCC will receive $1.5 million from the Ministry of Education’s Priorities & Partnerships Fund to continue providing province-wide support for active school travel (AST) through to March 2022.

The key goals of this investment are to help prepare students for learning and to improve safety in school zones. This exciting new chapter will see a third round of the OAST Fund open to applications in Fall 2020 and ensure ongoing training, networking and other centralized support services for local AST initiatives. GCC is very proud of this vote of confidence in our and our many partners’ efforts to rebuild a culture of walking and wheeling to school in Ontario.

“Our government is proud to support Ontario Active School Travel projects that promote healthy and active living habits, encourage travel choices that support the protection of the environment, and enhance student and staff safety in overly congested school zones. By partnering with Green Communities Canada, we are taking action to improve student physical and mental health, and help our young people stay active and safe on their way to school. As we navigate the COVID-19 outbreak, it is essential to continue to prioritize the well-being of our students.” ~Hon. Stephen Lecce, Ontario Minister of Education
