An estimated 2.2 million Canadian children take the school bus each year, exposing them to air pollution from diesel-fueled vehicles. Green Communities Canada, in partnership with Équiterre, is working to change that by greening the school bus commute.
The Canadian Electric School Bus Alliance (CESBA) launched on the eve of Earth Day.
“A key goal of the Alliance is to secure policy commitments from the federal and provincial governments to transition all school buses from diesel to electric power by 2040,” says GCC Executive Director Brianna Salmon. In addition to reducing student exposure to air pollution, the transition will help Canada reach its zero-emission vehicle transition goals.
This work is funded by the Trottier Family Foundation and the Consecon and Echo Foundations.
