The Project

In the late summer of 2023, the Rhoda Foundation embarked on an inspiring rain garden project at their Ottawa-based mosque along St. Joseph Boulevard. Despite challenges posed by rocky, poor-quality soil, the sloping site proved ideal for a rain garden, effectively managing rainwater runoff while enhancing biodiversity and community vitality. Over two key planting days, volunteers of all ages gathered to learn about plant species and strategic gardening practices. Innovative features like swales were incorporated to optimize water use and prevent runoff, bolstering both the ecological and aesthetic value of the space.

Lessons Learned

The project underscored the power of community engagement and strategic partnerships. By involving local residents and collaborating with Greening Sacred Spaces, the initiative not only revitalized the landscape but also fostered a sense of ownership and environmental stewardship among participants. Educational workshops and hands-on experiences enriched understanding of sustainable gardening practices, ensuring the project was rooted in ecological integrity and community values.

Final Thoughts

The success of this rain garden has sparked plans for additional green infrastructure projects in the area, including potential Depave Paradise initiatives to further enhance sustainability. The enthusiastic involvement of diverse community members, particularly youth, showcased the project’s inclusive spirit and positive impact.   Moving forward, the Rhoda Foundation remains committed to creating sustainable, community-centered spaces that promote biodiversity, environmental health, and communal well-being.
