Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a heat pump?

    • A heat pump is an electrical heating and cooling system. One heat pump replaces both your existing furnace and air conditioning systems.
  • How does a heat pump work?

    • A heat pump works in the same way an air conditioner works, but in the other direction.  It extracts heat from outdoor air and distributes the heat indoors.
  • What is a mini-split heat pump?

    • Specialized for houses without central ductwork, a mini-split (or “ductless”) heat pump provides indoor units usually mounted high on the wall that heat and cool the rooms they are installed in.  Mini-split heat pumps are most commonly used in houses with boilers and radiators or electric baseboard heating.
  • What is a geothermal or ground-source heat pump?

    • Heat pumps can extract heat from air or from under ground.  A ground-source heat pump may extract heat from well water or from a network of pipes under ground on your property.
  • What is a cold-climate heat pump?

    • Cold-climate heat pumps are specially designed to perform well in cold weather.  They maintain their efficiency and ability to extract heat to meet specific standards at low temperatures. Most incentive programs provide rebates for cold-climate heat pumps in Canada.
  • What is a heat pump water heater?

    • Heat pump water heaters do not generate heat directly. They move heat from the basement or utility room air into a hot water storage tank.
  • Can I still get a heat pump with the Canada Greener Homes Grant?

    • The Canada Greener Homes Grant is no longer accepting new applicants.
  • What is the Home Efficiency Rebate Plus (HER+) program and can I get a heat pump with it?

    • The Home Efficiency Rebate Plus (HER+) program in Ontario is no longer accepting new applicants.
