WALK Friendly launch

Site at www.walkfriendly.ca offers material on creating a walkable community. Coming soon: more details on the designation process

OUR NEW walk-friendly designation will celebrate Ontario communities that take steps to make walking safer, more attractive and more convenient.

Canada Walks (a division of Green Communities Canada) has launched WALK Friendly Ontario, including a great new website.

Starting in 2013 walk friendly designations will be awarded at the bronze, silver, gold, and platinum levels. Communities can get a head start now to be ready for the first intake of applications next year.

We borrowed the idea for a walk friendly designation from a successful US model. The opportunity for public recognition will encourage communities to make measurable progress toward improved walkability – by creating more appealing and lively streets and public spaces, improving sidewalks, street crossings, and trails, and so much more.

We know the huge benefits of a walkable urban environment – for health, environment, business, and community. The walk friendly designation is going to help get us there.
