As Executive Director of Green Communities Canada I have the honour and inspiration of working with over two dozen member organizations from coast to coast.
What an amazing group of people!
Our member organizations are each independent and community-based. They collaborate with all kinds of partners – municipalities, utilities, businesses, and others. And they are incredibly enterprising – constantly reinventing themselves to develop new environmental programs that help create sustainable communities.
Our members are located in all regions of the country. They are diverse – large/small, urban/rural, and varied in the work they do. But all work directly with people at home, work, and beyond to engage their communities in practical, positive action for a greener future.
Our members came together in 1995, almost two decades ago, to establish the association now known as Green Communities Canada. Through GCC we share our triumphs and challenges, borrow each other’s innovations and solutions, and build organizational skills and capacity.
We also go far beyond most associations in collaborating to deliver programs jointly, sharing infrastructure like program design, partnerships, training, and revenue generation. Examples include our award-winning private well stewardship program Well Aware, our pioneering home energy efficiency work, and our (literally) ground-breaking RAIN program, which reduces stormwater pollution through onsite infiltration. Canada Walks works to create walk friendly communities.
The joint program model offers the best of both worlds: community based program delivery and centralized program support. See our website for more, including summaries and links to sites for all our programs.
Sound interesting? Green Communities Canada is always open to new members. See membership criteria and eligibility criteria. Also see the application form and process. If you think you might like to join, give us a call and we’ll take it from there.
